“A bullet opened our wound, finding its buttons will cut the line with fascism to begin our healing and repair.” [2]
This bullet is one of the two most commonly used models in executions carried out by the Franco regime in Spain [1], a country where you can find a mass grave within a 50 km radius [3].
Thousands of people lie buried under the earth, waiting to be found and honored. Meanwhile, thousands of families yearn to unearth them and give them a dignified burial.
People say that when archaeologists finally locate them, in addition to bones, buttons from shirts, dresses, trousers or skirts are also found. I hope one day to find the ones of my grandfather and my uncle, so I can begin to heal the wound etched in the memory, both physical and emotional, of the bodies that shared their lives with them and those conceived after their murder. In the meantime, I will continue to give voice to this extermination.
I grew up hearing that if we remember our mistakes and learn from them, they may not be repeated. I don’t want them to impose a dictatorship again. And, you? Let’s give voice to the horrors of history.
